In this post I’m going to take on the role of an investigator to learn first and to share second what I’m learning. When I talk to businesses they will often ask me how I can help them with showing up in search engines like Google or Bing. Consider this your introduction to search engine optimization.
I think I can help, but it’s a territory which I am unfamiliar. In this post I’ll share my findings in probably a multipart series of posts. Let’s get started!
What’s Search Engine Optimization?
SEO is a marketing method aimed at growing your website’s (and business) visibility in search engine results. This way is a free way of marketing in the sense that you aren’t paying for ads that display on search engine sites. There is nothing technically free about SEO because you will either have to hire someone to work with you to improve your site, or spend time to get your site up to snuff and keep it there.
Why do I need to do SEO for my website?
Business is all about visibility. You can’t sell or serve customers if they can’t find you. From a customer’s perspective think how they operate if they want to find something. They search for something on Google, Bing, or Yahoo!. SEO is matching their search with your website. That’s a really simple way of explaining it, but every site needs SEO to be found. If you are actively using SEO strategies and techniques, you increase your chances of being found where if you don’t use SEO chances are you might be buried in search results and not see an increase in traffic and customers.
Who can do SEO for my website?
SEO is a complex approach to marketing your business, but the basics can be understood and applied by someone within your company. It seems to be that a small amount of knowledge and effort can be beneficial. Still, like going to a doctor or dentist, you could probably use a checkup every now and again from a professional who can advise you on new methods, tactics, or developments in the field.
Where can I learn more about SEO?
There are tons of sites to learn SEO from. A few I have found is Moz.com, Neil Patel, and also the search engine sites themselves; Google, Yahoo!, and Bing. A lot of information I have found useful so far is coming from Moz. They do an interesting Whiteboard Friday video that is really helpful in understanding SEO and learning new things.
Search Engine Optimization is a marketing practice to gain exposure and traffic from search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo!. You Need SEO to be found in search results. Anyone can learn the basics depending on your time and level of commitment, and there is a wealth of information on the web to get started learning.
