What Assessments Do

Top Personality Assessments for you and your team

Enneagram

The Enneagram is often thought of an ancient personality profile that categorizes a person based on nine different types. Each person reflects a little of all the types, but is highest in one and high in another.  Briefly, there is the Perfectionist, Helper, Performer, Romantic, Observer, Loyal Skeptic, Epicure/Creative, Protector, and Mediator.

Each type has their own motivations and what drives them. The Enneagram also reveals what some like to call their “shadow side”. The side that someone doesn’t like to deal with. This could be what a person needs to work on once they are aware of their type.
For me, the Enneagram presents a well rounded image of what a person might be like and how to work with someone as a personality. Finding out someone’s Enneagram is a tool to use to understand them as much as it is a way to understand yourself.

Strengths Finder

Strengthsfinder, now known as CliftonStrengths 34, is another personality profile that is popular with workplaces. In the Strengths Finder, you take an assessment and you are presented with your top 5 strengths out of a possible 34 strengths.

Their goal is to help you find out what you are good at so that you can do things that utilize your strengths. This will help you figure out how you approach work and what you might be best at based on what your strengths are.  In the workplace you’ll have a clearer picture of how to delegate work on the basis of their strengths.

For example, my top strength is Restorative, so I look at things as problems and how I can fix them to bring them back to whole.  I like to solve problems and that’s part of how I approach my work.

DiSC

The DiSC Profile is very popular with a lot of workplaces. It is a test that categorizes people into four categories.

  • Dominance – people tend to be confident and place an emphasis on accomplishing bottom-line results
  • Influence – people tend to be more open and place an emphasis on relationships and persuading others
  • Steadiness – people tend to be dependable and emphasize cooperation and sincerity
  • Conscientious – emphasize quality, accuracy, expertise, and competency.

These four categories help workers understand themselves and the people they work with. For instance, you know that if you work for a person who is a C, you need to be able to turn work in that is flawless and backed up with research or your expertise.

WIDGET – Pat Lencioni

A newer assessment has hit the market recently, and that’s Pat Lencioni’s W.I.D.G.E.T. assessment. This one is really interesting for me, because it is so different from the other personality profiles. Essentially, Lencioni categorizes six different working geniuses, and they spell out a nice acronym:

Wonder – ponders the possibility of greater potential and opportunities
Invention – the gift of creating original and novel ideas and solutions
Discernment – intuitively evaluates ideas and situations
Galvanizing – rallies, inspires, and organizes others to take action
Enablement – provides encouragement and assistance for an idea or project
Tenacity – pushes projects or tasks toward completion to achieve results

In the widget assessment, you will find out which two you are great at or highest skilled, then you’ll find out which two you are not as good at. Finally, you’ll see which two you are least great at. The idea is that whenever you take on something new or work on projects, you need people with these skills to help get things done and finished.

Paying special attention to the Discernment category, people with this skill are unique in that while others might go full bore into a new idea or project, you’ll need someone with discernment to tell when to do the project or if you should even go forward.
