Everyone can and should strengthen their goal setting. What’s a goal? A goal is a dream with a plan to get there. In this episode I’ll discuss four ways to make your goal setting muscle grow and call you to action to start setting your own goals.

Intro

I.    Goal setting can change your life:

  • Lemonade stand turns into a trampoline
  • Weigh the weight you want

II. Goal setting is easier when you have the right tools

  • You have a good framework for the goal
    • S.M.A.R.T.E.R.
  • You write them down
  • You review them regularly
  • The Full Focus Planner www.fullfocusplanner.com

Break
III.    Goal setting is easier when you have the right mindset

  • Find an accountability buddy
  • Community is key
  • Smaller steps toward something is better than big steps never taken

IV.    Lesson’s I’ve learned:

  • Perfection is a myth
  • It’s better to take a step towards a goal that isn’t perfect
  • Momentum

Conclusion:
Take away the myth that goal setting is a hard and unattainable practice, and believe that you can set goals and achieve them. All it takes is the right tools and the right mindset.
Challenge:Write down one goal you can complete by the end of the month. Review it daily. Break it down into smaller steps. Take small steps. Let me know how it went.

What Assessments Do

Top Personality Assessments for you and your team

Enneagram

The Enneagram is often thought of an ancient personality profile that categorizes a person based on nine different types. Each person reflects a little of all the types, but is highest in one and high in another.  Briefly, there is the Perfectionist, Helper, Performer, Romantic, Observer, Loyal Skeptic, Epicure/Creative, Protector, and Mediator.

Each type has their own motivations and what drives them. The Enneagram also reveals what some like to call their “shadow side”. The side that someone doesn’t like to deal with. This could be what a person needs to work on once they are aware of their type.
For me, the Enneagram presents a well rounded image of what a person might be like and how to work with someone as a personality. Finding out someone’s Enneagram is a tool to use to understand them as much as it is a way to understand yourself.

Strengths Finder

Strengthsfinder, now known as CliftonStrengths 34, is another personality profile that is popular with workplaces. In the Strengths Finder, you take an assessment and you are presented with your top 5 strengths out of a possible 34 strengths.

Their goal is to help you find out what you are good at so that you can do things that utilize your strengths. This will help you figure out how you approach work and what you might be best at based on what your strengths are.  In the workplace you’ll have a clearer picture of how to delegate work on the basis of their strengths.

For example, my top strength is Restorative, so I look at things as problems and how I can fix them to bring them back to whole.  I like to solve problems and that’s part of how I approach my work.

DiSC

The DiSC Profile is very popular with a lot of workplaces. It is a test that categorizes people into four categories.

  • Dominance – people tend to be confident and place an emphasis on accomplishing bottom-line results
  • Influence – people tend to be more open and place an emphasis on relationships and persuading others
  • Steadiness – people tend to be dependable and emphasize cooperation and sincerity
  • Conscientious – emphasize quality, accuracy, expertise, and competency.

These four categories help workers understand themselves and the people they work with. For instance, you know that if you work for a person who is a C, you need to be able to turn work in that is flawless and backed up with research or your expertise.

WIDGET – Pat Lencioni

A newer assessment has hit the market recently, and that’s Pat Lencioni’s W.I.D.G.E.T. assessment. This one is really interesting for me, because it is so different from the other personality profiles. Essentially, Lencioni categorizes six different working geniuses, and they spell out a nice acronym:

Wonder – ponders the possibility of greater potential and opportunities
Invention – the gift of creating original and novel ideas and solutions
Discernment – intuitively evaluates ideas and situations
Galvanizing – rallies, inspires, and organizes others to take action
Enablement – provides encouragement and assistance for an idea or project
Tenacity – pushes projects or tasks toward completion to achieve results

In the widget assessment, you will find out which two you are great at or highest skilled, then you’ll find out which two you are not as good at. Finally, you’ll see which two you are least great at. The idea is that whenever you take on something new or work on projects, you need people with these skills to help get things done and finished.

Paying special attention to the Discernment category, people with this skill are unique in that while others might go full bore into a new idea or project, you’ll need someone with discernment to tell when to do the project or if you should even go forward.

Crash Course In Email Marketing

March 17, 2021 by Jonathan Gaby

The goal of any business or cause, especially ones with a mission or a message, need to grow their email list. Yes, there is social media and online advertising, but those methods are largely dependent on algorithms, and now the whims of founders and developers who might not agree with the message or the mission of the organization. An email list and a thriving email marketing strategy and campaigns, will always trump the efforts of someone who utilizes social media exclusively. Email marketing is a straight line from the message or mission to the audience or activist. There is no middle man.
How does one start and grow their email list and begin to see the benefits of email marketing? There are really three steps to get started.

  1. Sign up for an email marketing system service
  2. Create an opt-in to attract subscribers
  3. Develop a welcome sequence
  4. Develop a consistent calendar to engage and keep engaged your list

Sign up for an email marketing system serviceThis is very simple. Go to MailChimp.com and sign up for a free account to get started. You’ll get the tools you need to start growing your email list for free up to 2,000 email addresses.
Create an opt-in to attract subscribersAn email address is an increasingly personal piece of information. We use email addresses every day to sign up for things, get emails from others, and create a conduit for communication. But, it’s the goal of the mission or message to get the address of the website visitor. To do this marketers create opt-ins or a reason for someone to give their email address in exchange for a piece of content.
What makes an opt-in great? It depends. You could create a checklist in pdf form, a white paper for a business case, a chapter of a book if you’re a writer, a series of videos if you’re a speaker, or even a few songs if you’re a singer or musician.
The nitty gritty comes in where you need to place that opt in in a prominent place to advertise on your site and include a pop up form or some form of lead page to your site to get people’s attention.
Develop a welcome sequenceThe next step is to develop a welcome sequence or some sort of an onboarding sequence. This could be a series of emails that are sent over a period of time to further introduce you to your new email subscriber, further develop your message, or ask them to take a series of actions. It’s really up to you what this might look like.
Commit to a regular calendar of emailsAfter you have developed your opt-in and are collecting emails, you now need to create a calendar for emails you will send. These emails could be blog posts you’ve created, products you want to sell, news you want to share, podcast episodes, or anything else you want to promote to them.
The key here is to keep your list engaged and make sure that your list is hearing from you.

Today I’d like to start a series on the podcast called, “Getting Down To Business”. This will be a multipart series to talk about the people side of business.

Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick-fil-A, famously said of his restaurant chain, “We aren’t really in the chicken business, we’re in the people business”. Everyone who is in business should understand that it’s the people that get us where we want to go.

With that in mind, we’ll start with talking about the first person in our business, ourselves. As a CEO, founder, principal, or even a manager or director, we should first lead ourselves before we lead others. How do we lead ourselves?

With a Life Plan.

Whoah now, you might be thinking, this is a business podcast Jonathan, why are you talking about a life plan?

Exactly. I want to talk about it for many reasons, but we’ll get there in a moment.
You might be asking me, “what exactly is a life plan?”

Well, you’re probably well familiar with creating a business plan which includes what you’ll do for business, how you’ll grow, goals to accomplish, amongst other things.

A Life Plan is kind of like a business plan, but the business is you. You decide what your life will be and how you will get there.

What is it? Well, for me, it’s a document that contains the eulogy someone will read at my funeral, my most important relationships, and my envisioned future for life in about 8-10 areas of my life, or “Life Domains”
So, why do you need a life plan?

I.  Every Leader needs to have a clear vision for their life

  • Lives don’t just casually go where you think they will.
  • If you don’t have clarity in what you want to do or accomplish how do you know you’re successful?
  • We never drift to the destination of our dreams.

II. Leaders who have a clear vision for their life are easier to follow and make better leaders

  • You’ll act and be perceived as better grounded because you know what you are working towards
  • With your security in yourself, you’ll be able to be more confident in your abilities
  • You’ll also be able to better tell where you’re growing and where you need to spend more time in personal development

III. Leaders who have a life plan will be more successful because they are doing less

  • Have you ever felt like you’re being pulled in several different places, assuming more and more responsibility, and being asked to do more? A life plan stops all that.
  • You will be empowered to say “No” to the things that aren’t in alignment with your goals and envisioned future. (Bye bye to all those boards and committees and extra activities.
  • You’ll have a filter to gauge whether or not to do that thing or join that organization

IV. Leaders who have a life plan are more likely to experience success in both their business and their life

  • Success is really an easy concept. You just do things that you say you’ll do and grow in the ways you want to grow.
  • A Life plan will help you see what success looks like and will actually help you tell if you’re being successful
  • You’ll gain clarity in what you’re working toward and can clearly say you are successful or not.

Conclusion
A Life Plan is like a business plan, but for your life in various areas and includes your eulogy, how you want to be remembered by your closest and most important relationships, and your envisioned future in your life domains. Every business leader should and must have a life plan. Why? To gain a clear vision for your life, to become easier to follow and improve on your leadership ability, you’ll be more successful by doing less, and you’ll be able to have more success in life and business.

What about you? Do you have a life plan? If you don’t I’d love it if you would email me at [email protected] and let me know why.

Finally, if you’ve enjoyed this episode of The Jonathan Gaby Podcast, would you mind rating and reviewing the show as well as subscribing so you don’t miss future episodes?
